Job Duties

  • Plating the Press – this requires the staff to open a guard and lean into a small area to remove the old plates and install new ones.
  • Web leading – This requires staff to lead or move the paper through a series of rollers and cylinders to the point that the folder can pull the paper in by itself. It also requires that the staff climb along with the paper, moving it through the press in hand-to-hand fashion using the ladders, stairs and steps.
  • Press start up – When the Press starts, the pressmen must be in position to make adjustments for the ink, water, folder, tension – these adjustments are made at various positions on the Press. This could take a pressman quickly from one level to another during this start period. Check that all plates are on the press in the right position.
  • While the press is running- Staff is responsible for registration, ink density and making sure that all the papers coming off the press are free of defects like scumming, wrinkles, light ink, heavy ink and turnovers.
  • Roll loading - During the course of the press shift, the staff must keep a constant supply of paper going to the Press. This is done by moving large rolls of paper to the Press by means of robotic roll movers and manual settings by the staff to position these rolls into the press. These rolls weigh 2000 lbs. each and sometimes need to be manually rolled into position. (It's like pushing a car.
  • Spray bar replacement – During the press run it may become necessary to change a spray bar. This is done by opening the tower doors, crawling inside the tower, disconnecting the bar and lifting it out. The bar weights approximately 50 lbs.
  • After the run- Staff is required to pick up paper from floors, decks and to clean up spills to keep a safe work area.
  • Pressmen are working in an area that requires a great deal of physical stamina, ability to give full attention to the working Press and be able to react quickly to any problems that may arise.

Following is a description of the TKS press and work requirements:

  • The Press is 65 feet tall, taking in six levels.
  • There are stairs at 45 degree angles for all levels. A pressman will use these stairs many times throughout the daily shift.
  • There are ladders, steps, and access panels throughout the Press on each level. A pressman will use these ladders, steps, and access panels throughout their shift.
  • The Press is a running piece of equipment that turns at speeds in excess of 70,000 copies (newspapers) per hour.
  • During the course of their daily work, a pressman will climb, bend, reach, stoop, lift and crawl. It is very physically-demanding work.
  • During the course of their shift, they are required to lift heavy rollers into and out of the Press.

Shift work – We are a 24/7 / 365 days a year operation and you may be scheduled on holidays, weekends, nights & lobster shifts.

Your availability will be required as needed, based on workload and staffing levels.
