Position Summary:

Entry level apprentices perform general cleaning and upkeep of the press and its accessories for the purpose of basic training in the pressroom and gaining familiarity with the press and its functions

  • Remove used plates from press area: band plates for recycle
  • Clean ink hose
  • Clean ink canisters
  • Clean dust collector
  • Mix special colored inks
  • Clean walkways and upper decks
  • Clean the inside and outside of deck superstructure
  • Clean the inside and outside of reel superstructure
  • Accurately mix soaps and chemical cleaners
  • Train and, as requested, assist in the duties of pressroom.
  • General clean up
  • Train on the "fly"

WORK/Physical REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to reach all press surfaces to be cleaned
  • Requires crawling in to some tight spots and kneeling as well as climbing ladders
  • Ability to pass test for color discernment
  • Ability to use both hands
  • Ability to stand for most of a shift
  • Ability to withstand contact with soaps and chemical cleaners
  • Ability to maintain accuracy and completeness on monotonous tasks.
  • Ability to lifts and carry up to 60 lbs.
  • Ability to maneuver pallets weighing 2200 lbs
  • Ability to reach and stay stable while mopping press deck stairways
  • Basic math and reading skills
  • Ability to withstand paper dust
  • Ability to withstand noise and humidity of running press
  • Ability to respond immediately to safety and other signals on machinery
  • Basic communication skills

Following is a description of the TKS press and work requirements:

  • The Press is 65 feet tall, taking in six levels.
  • There are stairs at 45 degree angles for all levels. A pressman will use these stairs many times throughout the daily shift.
  • There are ladders, steps, and access panels throughout the Press on each level. A pressman will use these ladders, steps, and access panels throughout their shift.
  • The Press is a running piece of equipment that turns at speeds in excess of 70,000 copies (newspapers) per hour.
  • During the course of their daily work, a pressman will climb, bend, reach, stoop, lift and crawl. It is very physically-demanding work.
  • During the course of their shift, they are required to lift heavy rollers into and out of the Press.
  • Shift work – We are a 24/7 / 365 days a year operation and you may be scheduled on holidays, weekends, nights & lobster shifts
